"The I Cantori chorus, consisting of amateur music lovers from our community, has consistently sung with extraordinary enthusiasm, and on this occasion outdid themselves in the many levels of dynamics (from the most beautiful pianissimo to strong fortissimo) and well articulated expression.”

Auditions for I Cantori di Carmel
We invite you to sing with us!
Auditions for the I Cantori di Carmel Fall 2023 season are now closed. But do not fret, you can audition again soon for our spring concerts.
|
I Cantori di Carmel offers dedicated singers the opportunity to study and perform a diverse repertoire of great choral works from many eras and genres. We perform both a cappella and with orchestral accompaniment. Our volunteer singing membership is a diverse, multigenerational and open community of committed singers and is drawn from the trained, non-professional musicians in the greater Monterey Bay area community. We are looking for experienced choral singers with good musical skills and an enthusiasm for participating in an active and dynamic musical organization.
What to expect at an audition:
Each semester, rehearsals begin in late August or in late January, and beginning in 2023 will be at the First Presbyterian Church in Monterey. We rehearse weekly on Wednesday evenings from 6:15-9:30 p.m. with additional rehearsalsscheduled throughout the season. Our next concerts will take place on December 2 and 3, 2023 at Carmel Mission Basilica in Carmel, December 9, 2023 at Five Wounds Portuguese National Church in San Jose and December 10, 2023 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Santa Cruz. We will perform Mendelssohn’s Psalm 42 and Vom Himmel hoch, Bruch’s Gruss an die heilige Nacht (Op. 62) and works by Rheinberger and Humperdinck. All works will be performed with orchestra.
Singers each pay $150.00 for the season, and also pay an additional amount to cover the cost of purchasing and/or printing scores (varies each season). If cost is a barrier for participation, let us know and we will strive to work something out.
At this point in time, we are not mandating COVID testing or vaccinations (although we encourage all singers to stay current with vaccinations). We will carefully observe CDC guidelines and make adjustments if necessary. If you prefer to wear a mask during rehearsals, you may do so.
What to expect at an audition:
- The audition is casual, supportive and private
- It only takes about 10 minutes
- Once you are assigned a time for your audition, you will be sent a short melody to prepare in advance. You will receive either a treble clef or bass clef version (with options in 3 keys to choose from). This melody will be sung without accompaniment.
- Perform your prepared piece in the key you have selected.
- Sing some simple vocal exercises with Music Director Daniel Henriks to discover your vocal range and voice type.
- Sight read a short selection from our current choral repertoire.
