Who we are
I Cantori di Carmel is a volunteer chorus of about 50 members with the mission of seeking excellence in choral performance. Our programs include major choral works as well as lesser-known jewels of the choral repertoire. The concerts usually feature professional soloists and an orchestral ensemble.
I Cantori di Carmel has been bringing choral classics to the Monterey Peninsula since 1981. We perform major concerts twice annually, in December and May, at the Carmel Mission Basilica, as well as various other venues throughout the year. We are proud to offer choral workshops yearly in October or November, which are open to all interested musicians. We also organize tours approximately every three years to sing together in European cathedrals.
I Cantori di Carmel is listed as an advanced chorus class at Monterey Peninsula College, and each member is required to register as a student. Membership is by audition only. To schedule an audition, call 831-644-8012. Regular attendance at rehearsals is mandatory. Our rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings, and as the concerts approach, also on Monday evening. Our rehearsal schedule roughly follows the Fall and Spring academic calendar.
Our Music Director
Dr. Sal Ferrantelli is professor of choral music at Monterey Peninsula College, where he has taught since 1981. He has led I Cantori di Carmel from its inception. An arranger and composer as well as educator, conductor, and singer, Dr. Ferrantelli is a member of the American Choral Directors Association and has performed with the Robert Shaw Choral Workshop. He received his bachelor and master of arts degrees from San Diego State University and his doctorate in music from Indiana University. San Diego State University recently honored him as their Music Alumnus of the Year, 1996.
Our Accompanist
Pauline Thomas Troia has a wide range of experience in choral accompaniment, chamber music, opera, musical theater, and symphony performance.
